Wrecking Christmas

Tyler is always the first to wake in our home each morning. The rule is to stay in bed until it's light outside and to stay quiet until Gavin wakes up. Christmas morning he was up way earlier than usual, I heard his toilet flush at 5:40 am. Painful, especially since we were up late Christmas Eve doing the things parents do before Santa's visit. Just as I was dosing back off thinking it must have been too cold and dark for him to stay out of bed, I hear him screeching to Gavin, announcing their stockings have stuff in them and there are presents under the tree. There was no stopping them, they were up and running and Shawn & I knew we had to get up if we wanted to see their excitement.

Even though it was still dark and too early for the heater to have even kicked on yet, we dragged our grown up and exhausted bodies out of bed and woke up enough to watch them rip open their gifts and tear through their stockings. With Santa's gifts opened and new toys to play with, Shawn & I went back to bed tellng the boys we'd open the rest of the presents after we woke up. I woke up two hours later to the sound of ripping paper and jumped up to investigate. Funny, I figured that must have been the first present they'd tried to sneak open but much to my chagrin, it was more like their last. They had opened every present under the tree, except a few to me and Shawn. It was quite a sight to see the destruction, but our disappointment in not being able to see them open their gifts blinded us from seeing any humor in the situation. At least on Christmas. We know we'll laugh some day and we did our best not to let it wreck the rest of our wonderful Christmas day.
